BrugBouwer (trans: Bridge Builder) was a participatory community art project envisioned in collaboration a local youth worker, researchers and local council members. Based in a diverse residential neighbourhood of Groningen, The Netherlands, BrugBouwer set out a framework to enable young families to bridge the gap between their neighbourhood and the currently inaccessible local park. By bringing various groups of residents together to create an asphalt mural that crosses the road, the BrugBouwer serves as a catalyst to initiate local conversations about place, belonging and diversity in the local area.
The project was developed and tested with local residents and then led to an intensive three week period of collaborative designing and on site prototyping, resulting in a final mural being installed by local mural artist collective VAAF.
